11 Nov 2013 … House Republicans are balking at renewing long-term unemployment insurance. But more austerity could be devastating for the recovery. Continue reading

7 Jul 2016 … I have struggled to find words to express what I thought and felt as I watched the videos of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile being killed by the police. Last night, I wanted to say something that hasn't been said a hundred times before. It finally dawned on me that there is nothing to say that hasn't been said before. As I was preparing to write about the oldness of all of this, and share some wisdom passed down from struggles of earlier eras, I heard on the news that eleven officers had been shot in Dallas, several killed from sniper fire. My fingers froze on the keys. I could not bring myself to recycle old truths. Something more is required. But what? Continue reading
  4. The Ten Hardline Conservatives Pulling the Strings of the GOP Shutdown Illustrations by Joe Fournier
10 Oct 2013 … Just looking at the rank-and-file members of the “suicide caucus” is like focusing on the marionette rather than the puppet-master. Who's pulling the strings? Continue reading
  5. SEC May Require Corporations to Disclose Political Donations
4 Apr 2013 … At the urging of a “loose coalition of Democratic elected officials, shareholder activists and pension funds” the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is considering a new rule that will require all publicly traded corporations to disclose their political donations, reports Nick Confessore in The New York Times: A petition to the SEC asking it to … Continue reading
  6. Inequality’s Dead End — And the Possibility of a New, Long-Term Direction
3 Mar 2015 … The crisis of inequality represents a tragic and painful failure of the old system and the old politics, but it's also an oppurtunity to create something new. Continue reading

2 Feb 2016 … A huge amount of new information will soon be available online, giving Americans a better sense of who is trying to shape our elections. Late last week, the Federal Communications Commission voted unanimously to require cable, satellite and radio stations to upload information on who buys political advertising on their air to the Internet. Any cable subscriber with more than 1,000 subscribers will have to disclose who is paying them to broadcast political messages. Television broadcast stations have had to post this info to the Internet since 2014, but before that were only required to keep physical files on hand at their headquarters — any journalist or concerned citizen who wanted to know who was responsible for a given ad would have to show up in person to sort through papers. Continue reading
  8. A Judge in Louisiana Is Letting a Private Company Charge People to Get Out of Jail, Says the ACLU Barbed wire fence of a prison. (Photo by John Greim/LightRocket via Getty Images)
8 Aug 2017 … For some people arrested in East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana, posting bail is often not enough to get them out of jail. According to a new class action suit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union, the ACLU of Louisiana, and the Southern Poverty Law Center, the parish jail is requiring these arrestees to pay an organization that handles pretrial supervision services before being released. Attorneys argue this constitutes a violation of the Fourteenth Amendment, which guarantees equal protection, and the Fourth Amendment, which protects individuals from unreasonable searches and seizures. Continue reading
  9. The Big Lie at the Heart of the Texas Abortion Clinic Case Pro-choice advocates rally outside of the Supreme Court on March 2, 2016 in Washington, DC. On Wednesday morning, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt case, where the justices will consider a Texas law requiring that clinic doctors have admitting privileges at local hospitals and that clinics upgrade their facilities to standards similar to hospitals. 3 Mar 2016 … In the summer of 2013, Texas enacted a law “to improve the standard of care for abortion patients.” That’s what the state’s Attorney General has told the Supreme Court lawmakers intended to do, anyway. The law, known as HB 2, requires clinics that perform abortions to meet standards set for surgical centers, even if they only provide non-surgical abortions by pill, and mandates that doctors have permission to admit patients to a hospital within 30 miles. Together, the two requirements could leave fewer than a dozen clinics open in a state home to 5.4 million women of reproductive age. Continue reading

11 Nov 2016 … Last week I met a prominent network personage I will call Sandra. I asked her what had been going on in her shop since election night. “Soul-searching,” she said. Approvingly, I commiserated, then asked what kind of soul-searching she meant. “The polls were all wrong,” she said, “and we took them at face value. Also, we had no idea what was going on in the white working class.” That was all. Continue reading
